Hello You 64: There is Something Else We Can Do

Cognitive skills, a father's influence works both ways, and does your body keep the score?

My guest on this episode of Hello You is Samaa Al-Moussalli.

She’s the founder of Rising Brains, which is based in Telford and works to support and boost people’s cognitive skills. Samaa tells me how she went from a Masters in educational psychology in Saudi Arabia, to bringing this approach to the UK … and why she chose Telford as her ideal base. Why not share this episode with someone?

Samaa mentions the book The Body Keeps the Score, an enlightening analysis of the impact of traumatic stress, by Dutch psychiatrist Bessel van der Kolk. A lot of people have found this book very helpful, although there’ve been some who’ve labelled parts of it as ‘pseudoscience’. Read it for yourself and decide?

I’ll post a link to an article about The Body Keeps the Score in this week’s Hello You Sunday Supplement. That’s an email newsletter I send out every Sunday morning with a bunch of links to articles that I think you’ll find interesting. To make sure you don’t miss it, or future episodes Hello You, subscribe:

And if you enjoy what I do, you probably know someone else who’ll get something from it, too. It might be a friend or a colleague, or the people in your WhatsApp chat group or on a Facebook page. Share Hello You with them?

Tomorrow (Saturday) morning I’ll be at Shrewsbury’s Repair Café. It’s in the church hall of the United Reformed Church at Coleham Head, by the English Bridge. I won’t be fixing anything, I’ll just be sitting there with my little audio recorder, having conversations with people. Maybe with you, if you come along. And you can hear what happens tomorrow, in the next episode of Hello You. I’ll be there from about 11am, and it would be great to meet you and listen to what you have to say.

Hello You with Jim Hawkins
I’m trying to give you something a little different. Hello You is about stuff, and things. People, and stories. Shrewsbury, and Shropshire. Mental health and well-being. History and heritage. Arts, culture and music. Faith, belief and the complexities of life.
I’m a good listener. It’s what I do. And for Hello You, I’m listening to (and talking with) fascinating people, mostly but not always from Shropshire, so that you can hear what they have to say.
It's public-service local journalism that cares about people. Audio that brings you the voices of people you might not hear from otherwise. Interviews conducted with compassion and empathy. Thoughtful, positive, good-humoured conversations, informed local storytelling, and commentary that’s not afraid to get righteously angry on occasion.
